Mountain gorillas are organized into family groups of around ten individuals, led by a dominant male. The back hair of older males turns a silver-grey color, earning them the nickname "silverbacks". Gorillas are genetically very close to humans, sharing 15% of the human genome, particularly in relation to hearing, which is closer to that of gorillas than chimpanzees. Their cognitive and social abilities are highly developed.
There are only 1,000 mountain gorillas left in the wild, of which 600 are adults, making them an endangered species (IUCN, 2018). Today, the population is growing thanks to conservation efforts. Ecotourism developed in this region provides funds for gorilla protection programs and raises public awareness.
