In this tree, there are no less than 11 lionesses and cubs! They climb to escape the heat and insects, but also to see further when the grass grows over 2 meters tall during the rainy season.
There are about 20,000 lions left in Africa. Lion populations in East, Central, and West Africa are declining extremely rapidly (about -60% from 1994 to 2014), while some populations in Southern Africa are increasing due to conservation programs. African lions are classified as vulnerable (IUCN 2014). They are primarily threatened by conflicts with farmers and poaching for their meat.
