Unlike females who are solitary, male cheetahs often live in coalitions of two or three individuals (sometimes up to five), usually brothers. They share a very strong social bond. They show affection, groom each other, and will chirp if one of them is absent.
Cheetahs look very similar to each other. The genetic diversity within this species is very low, due to a severe population bottleneck that occurred probably 10,000 years ago.
Currently, this species is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. The latest estimates (from 2017) indicate that cheetah populations continue to decline, with approximately 7,100 individuals remaining in the wild worldwide. This species is particularly threatened by habitat loss, conflict with humans (livestock predation), poaching for fur or bones and teeth used in traditional Chinese medicine, as well as illegal trade as pets.
