Rise of the desert lions
The story of lions is an endless one ... they are a symbol of strength, power, sovereignty and royalty. In northern Egypt, lions were thought to have prodigious powers ... powers of destruction and violence, but also of re-generation. In the past, lions’ habitat extended from North Africa to South-West Asia, and from Europe to India through the Middle East.
Today, these big cats only survive in certain areas of sub-Saharan Africa, as well as in a small region of western India. It is estimated there are fewer than 23,000 individuals today, a 43% drop in only 20 years…
But the incredible story of these desert lions gives us a message of hope, in one of the harshest and most remote places on our planet, where their footprints are nothing but dust. In an environment as vast as the Namib Desert, they remain the kings. Their incredible intelligence allowed them to adapt to this inhospitable place and to survive the most extreme conditions.
