The African wild dog lives in nomadic packs of up to several dozen individuals. This highly structured and closely bonded social structure is dominated by the alpha couple, which is usually the only one to reproduce. The species' genetic diversity is ensured by the migration of young wild dogs who join or create other packs when they reach sexual maturity.
The African wild dog is the most endangered large carnivore in Africa. This canid is at risk of extinction due to its declining population, with only around 6,600 individuals, including just 1,400 adult individuals (IUCN 2012). The fragmentation of its habitat and population groups makes maintaining genetic mixing difficult. Increased contact with humans has led to conflicts and the transmission of infectious diseases.
