This marine mammal spends most of its time on the sea ice where it hunts seals, rather than on solid ground. Its highly developed sense of smell allows it to detect the presence of a seal located more than 1,500 meters away and 1 meter deep under the snow. An excellent swimmer, the polar bear can swim for several days in a row and cover several hundred kilometers.
The polar bear lives exclusively in the Arctic and depends on sea ice to hunt. In the absence of sea ice, it moves to solid ground where it has extremely limited access to food. The minimum annual surface area of sea ice decreased by more than 40% from 1979 to 2011. The melting of sea ice is due to the increase in temperature on Earth and the greenhouse gases present in the atmosphere. Climate change is the most serious and direct threat to the survival of the polar bear.
With an estimated population of around 26,000 individuals, it is classified as vulnerable by the IUCN (2015).
