These two cheetahs perched on a tree trunk are scanning the plain to spot their future prey. Their black tears absorb sunlight, giving them remarkable vision despite bright light.
Known for its explosive speed, the cheetah is also an excellent lookout. Its hunting technique relies as much on its ability to approach its prey unseen as on its ability to surprise them with rapid acceleration and direction changes. With its light and flexible bones, highly developed cardio-respiratory system, and exceptional balance, it is built for running. However, its slender morphology disadvantages it against other predators (lions, hyenas, and sometimes leopards) that can take its prey.
